Irish Single Pot Still Whiskies

Rich and robust in flavour, with a thick, creamy texture, I love a single-pot still. These are quite different in style, but in my opinion, equal in quality to the more famous single malts. These are the whiskies that made Ireland the biggest whiskey producer in the nineteenth century, this category is the pride of the Emerald Isle.

Redbreast 12-Year-Old

The most obvious selection in any category, Redbreast is an icon, a legend in the world of whiskey. I taste rich dried fruits, sweet honey and toffee, with a warm spicy character, cloves to be specific. What do you taste in this most famed of Irish whiskies?

John Powers Three Swallows

Another great Irish whiskey, this is a very fruity one, with soft summer fruits and a slightly sharper citrus note. I love the combination of these fruity notes with the slightly thicker mouthfeel. You can still taste the malt and wood, there is a peppery note there as well, but it is soft and part of quite a nice warm and spicy background.

Moving On

Green Spot by Mitchells is an excellent single-pot still. Fruity and thick, this one is a staple for any fan of Irish whiskey.

If you like the Redbreast 12-year-old, the 15-year-old is somehow even better.

Despite this page being for single-pot stills, I have to recommend a couple of Irish single malts. The Bushmills 10-year-old is a lovely fruity and elegant one. The 16-year-old from Bushmills is a beauty of a drink, aged in three woods, not only ex-bourbon and sherry, but port as well. Connemara make peated Irish single malts, which are entirely different from the Scotch variations and must be tried by anyone serious about Irish whiskey.
